Tourism earnings, workers’ remittance top USD 1 Bn in 1Q-2025

The registration of new motor vehicles increased by 164% year on year to 24,176 in January to February two months of 2025 compared to 9,144 in 2024 according to the Department of Motor Traffic. Over 22,000 motor cycles have been registered in 2025 so far, a year on year increase of 200.5%

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has experienced significant growth in the first quarter of 2025, with arrivals and earnings showing year-on-year increases, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Tourist arrivals between January to March 2025 reached 722,276, a 13.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024, where arrivals stood at 635,784. Earnings from the tourism sector also surpassed USD 1 billion point, totaling USD 1.12 billion, signaling a 9.4% rise from USD 1.02 billion in the first quarter of 2024.
