The president is said to be planning on pardoning four convicted prisoners.
The prisoners who were convicted by the courts over two incidents which took place during the humanitarian operation comprise an army officer and three soldiers.
The pardon will be awarded based on the powers vested with the president under paragraph 34 of the constitution.
The four prisoners were convicted by the Trincomalee and Colombo High Courts.
All four have been given the death sentence. According to a report published in the Deshaya newspaper, the president has called for a report from the three high court judges who had handed the death sentence to the four accused in order to determine the possibility of pardoning them.
It is speculated that these four convicted prisoners would be pardoned prior to the general election.
