PM inaugurates ‘Gamata Geyak - Ratata Hetak’ programme today

The National Housing Programme ‘Gamata Geyak - Ratata Hetak’ to construct 14,000 houses across the country within 60 days, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Warawewa, Giribawa in Kurunegala today (Feb 01).

The objective of the programme is to construct 14,022 houses with one in each Grama Niladhari Division of the country for a low income family. The houses would be granted to the recipients in two months. The recipient is selected not on political affiliations but by a Committee consisting of religious dignitaries, local political representatives, Grama Niladhari, Samurdhi Development Officers, Development Officers, Family Health Officers and community representatives. Priority will be given to families with a disabled breadwinner or widow centric families.

A family consisting of a number of school children with a permanent address and yet without a house would also be eligible for selection.

The progress of construction activities would be reviewed by the Housing Development Authority. This is the first phase of a project under the “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” Policy Statement that guarantees a comfortable house for every family to create a productive and happy citizen in the country.
