Over 7000 state sector executives deprived of their Rs.15, 000 special allowances

Over 7000 state sector executives will be temporary loosing their special monthly allowance of Rs.15, 000 granted by the previous regime on a decision taken by the present government.

The Government has decided to suspend the payment of the Rs. 15,000 special monthly allowance to officers holding posts in the executive grade of the public service, which was to come into effect from 1 January this year.

The Ministry of Public Administration, issued a circular suspending the special allowance was being temporarily suspended in keeping with a Cabinet decision made on 2 January.

The allowance was part of an enhanced salary package that came into effect for all public sector workers from this month in keeping with a decision taken by the previous Government.

The Cabinet decided to suspend the payment of the special allowance even though salary hikes for others in the sector would be paid as announced last October.

The allowance was to be paid from January this year irrespective of the period the officers served in the category of executive services instead of the allowance paid before, which was based on the period of service.

2200 Sri Lanka Administrative Service officials, 800 Plan implementation service officers, 1600 accountant service personnel and 2697 Education Administration Officers will be deprived of this special allowance won by them through trade union actions.

Several state executive officers noted that it is unjustifiable for the government to suspend their special allowance obtained after a hard fought struggle with the previous regime.
They noted that most of the senior executive officers were going after politicians to get high government posts and that was the reason for the silent attitude of trade unions.

The Government Executive Officers Union engaged in a continuous strike during the past months demanding a special allowance from the previous government.
Accordingly, the cabinet approval was granted to provide the Government Executive Officers with a special allowance of Rs 15,000.
