Presidential Commission to probe public sector political victimization under Yahapalanaya

A three member Presidential commission will be appointed on the directions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to find redress for all government officials who were politically victimized during the previous Yahapalana regime.

A special gazette notification has been issued with regard to the appointment of Retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, Retired Appeal Court Judge Daya Chandrasiri Jayathilke and Retired IGP Chandra Fernando as commissioners.

The Special Commission will investigate matters pertaining to political victimization of government officials during the previous regime and make necessary recommendations with in six months.

After the conclusion of investigations by the commission, measures will be taken to restore the ranks and rights of those who were subject to political revenge and punishment.

Measures will also be taken to enact laws to protect them from discrimination at workplaces in future.

The new commission will probe into all inquiries concluded or ongoing by FCID, Bribery Commission, or SIU of Police, while also reviewing if those were carried out based on formal complaints..

A large number of full-time and part-time public officers, particularly attached to the Tri-Forces, police, law enforcement units and other Government institutions before the 2015 Presidential Election and General Election have been politically victimized, official sources said.

The commission will also inquire if those politically victimised public officials were specifically targeted by a third party and if those institutions were misused or powers exceeded.
The Commission will outline the process of investigation and recommendations of these inquiries.
