Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to extend his support in parliament to adopt media guidelines into law to ensure the future elections are held in an independent and fair manner.
Mahinda Deshapriya stated that the relevant proposal would be submitted to Parliament shortly.
He had also requested the Speaker to expeditiously adopt the necessary regulations to hold the Provincial Council Elections currently suspended.
In addition, Deshapriya noted that he intends to submit the necessary amendments to be included in the Provincial Council Act in order to correct the mistakes that occurred in the previous Provincial Council election.

Accordingly, the Speaker has said that he would take necessary steps to provide the support of Parliament to turn media guidelines into law and ensure a conducive environment is created to facilitate a free and fair election.
The Speaker had also commended the Elections Commission for their efforts in ensuring the last presidential election was held independently and fairly.
