Service extensions for Shavendra and Sathyapriya

President Maithripala Sirisena has granted extensions of service to Army Commander Shavendra Silva and Chief of Staff Sathyapriya Liyanage, it is reported.

The president has extended their service in his capacity as the Commander in Chief.

Accordingly, Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage has been granted a service extension of six months until May 31, 2020, while Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva has been granted a service extension until January 2021.

Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva was appointed as the 23rd Army Commander on August 21 and as he reached his retirement age of 55 years on July 22, the President granted him a service extension until December 22.

On August 27th the Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Sathyapriya Liyanage completed 55 years and was scheduled to retire in December. However, the President has extended his term until May 31st 2020.
