The Elections Commission is urging government workers currently engaged in trade union actions to urgently engage in discussions to settle their issues as the state machinery needs to be able to function at an optimum level in order that the Presidential elections are conducted smoothly.
In a Press Release issued today 6 Oct, the Chief Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya notes that workers in a number of government departments appear to be preparing to strike or take other trade union actions. They range from postal workers to workers in the Railway Department, he said.
He also observed that workers in some semi-government organisations were also contemplating such actions.
“For an election to be conducted in a truly efficient and transparent manner” every government servant ranging from Ministry Secretaries to daily paid employees must function at their optimal level, Deshapriya said.
However, under whatever circumstances the EC is ready to conduct the elections on the appointed date and time, he added.
