Hydropower generation drops to 20%: Ministry

The hydropower generation in the country has dropped to 20% due to the prevailing dry weather condition, the Power Ministry said.

They said with the current situation there would be a need for purchasing electricity from the private sector.

42% of the electricity is generated by the thermal power plants and 2% through wind power, the Ministry said.

Also said, 38% of other state-owned and private sector power plants are added to the national grid.

Accordingly, it has been proposed to purchase about 300MW of electricity from private sector, whereas the Cabinet ministers had given their approval to purchase only about 128 MW.

A proposal has been submitted in this regard to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) requesting permission.

The PUCSL had called an emergency meeting in the coming weeks to discuss about giving permission.
