Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam instructed its officials to make arrangements to enrol orphaned children who are residing in state registered or sponsored orphanages into the national schools today.
The decision was taken following complaints received by the education ministry regarding the rejection of applications of orphaned children. The principal who rejected an application of orphaned child had stated that by admitting an orphaned child into the school, it will bring disrepute to the school.
However, the Minister reiterated that since assuming office in 2015, he had taken several measures to provide quality education for all children.
