First 500,000 consignment of COVID-19 vaccine to arrive tomorrow

The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday expressed their appreciation to India for providing 500,000 Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines to Sri Lanka, with the shipment to arrive in Colombo tomorrow.

“In view of the long-standing relationship between Sri Lanka and India and the cooperation between the two countries in the face of COVID-19 over the past year, the Government of India has decided to grant over 500,000 vaccines manufactured in India to Sri Lanka,” a hand-out by the Government Information Department at the weekly Cabinet briefing said.

“Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa informed the Cabinet of Ministers that the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has informed that the consignment of vaccines is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on 28 January and the Cabinet of Minister decided to express the appreciation and gratitude of the Sri Lankan Government in this regard,” it added.

Local health officials have been preparing to roll out the vaccinations immediately, with frontline workers to get the first jabs over the next few weeks.
