Ukraine not under lockdown – Ranatunga

Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga has stressed Ukraine has not been subjected to a country-wide lockdown at present.

Speaking to media in Ratnapura, Minister Ranatunga said only measures such as school closures and bans on large gatherings have been implemented in Ukraine.

When questioned about claims circulating via social media that Ukrainian tourists in Sri Lanka are not abiding by health safety guidelines, the Minister said there are instances of people taking pictures without their masks on.

He however noted it is everyone’s responsibility whether local or foreign, to adhere to regulations if the spread of the virus is to be contained.

Meanwhile Minister Prasanna Rantunga stressed a final decision on allowing tourists into the island, will be reached by the Ministry of Health and the COVID-19 Suppression Committee.

He noted at present only a temporary ban on arrivals from the UK remains in place, adding until the 19th of January tourists can visit Sri Lanka on charter flights under controlled measures.

However he noted thereafter anyone can come to Sri Lanka in accordance and adherence with health safety regulations issued by the WHO, IATA and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health and COVID-19 Committee.
