SDG Mainstreaming and Data Capacity Building Workshop for the Ministry of Environment

A Workshop on SDG Mainstreaming and Data Capacity Building was conducted for the Ministry of Environment by the Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka (SDCSL) on 23rd December at the Ministry of Environment (Sobadampiyasa) in collaboration with the Department of Census and Statistics and UNDP Sri Lanka. SDCSL is mandated to provide guidance relating to sustainable development to ministries and other government institutions in terms of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Development Act, No 19 OF 2017.


Within the national policy framework ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’, 07 Sustainable Development Goals and 19 Targets are directly relevant to the Ministry of Environment and the institutions coming within its purview. Capacity development for data generation and compilation for approximately 30 SDG indicators, including CO2 emission rate, national recycling rate, total GHG emissions per year was also discussed during the workshop.

The workshop was attended by the Hon. Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe and other relevant officials from the Ministry of Environment and the Central Environment Authority. The workshop was conducted by the officials of SDCSL, Ms Chamindry Saparamadu (Director General), Ms. Nadeeka Amarasinghe (Assistant Director) and Ms. Sheron Hewawaduge (Assistant Director) with the technical support of the Department of Census and Statistics and the UNDP Sri Lanka.
