State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene will make a statement clarifying the Government’s position on the controversial Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to be entered into with the United States government, Public Administration Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said.
Speaking to journalists this afternoon (3 July), Bandara said that SOFA has yet to be finalised as discussions are still underway between the two governments, with the Ministry of Defence overseeing the agreement.
“There is no need to fear the SOFA. The Government will take an appropriate decision. The Ministry of Defence is overseeing it,” he said.
Asked about the differences between the original Acquisition and Cross Services Agreement (ACSA) signed in 2007 and the versioned entered into in 2017, the Minister again said that Minister Wijewardene will make a statement on the agreements.
