Reopening schools: not thermometers yet

The Education Ministry is waiting for the recommendations by the Director General of Health Services for the purchasing of thermometers to be used in schools countrywide to check the temperatures of students as a health precaution for Covid-19, The Sunday Morning learnt.

An allegation was made by a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate last week that the Ministry had already awarded a tender to purchase thermometers by violating tender procedures, and that it had been awarded to one of the highest bidders, while disregarding the lowest bidder.

Denying the allegation, Education Ministry Secretary N.H.M. Chithrananda told The Sunday Morning that the Ministry had not finalised the tender.

Instead, the tender has been opened for objections after shortlisting the eligible bidders, he said.
