Insurance programme for Buddhist monks

The insurance scheme introduced by the government for the Buddhist monks be launched by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (26).

The event will be launched at 3.30 pm at Temple Trees today(26).

Minister of Buddhist affairs and Wayamba Development Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said 2000 monks will be covered under the first stage of insurance program. The Ministry of Buddha Sasana is implementing the program on the instructions of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Chief Incumbent of Kolonnawa Sedawatta Weheragoda Viharaya, Ambanwala Gnanaloka Thero said that this program will be implemented to insure the Buddhist clergy living in all 25 districts of the country.

Ambanwala Gnanaloka Thero said insurance coverage will be symbolically offered for 2000 monks at the ceremony on Wednesday and after that the coverage will be provided island wide at district and provincial level to the monks.

Under the insurance scheme, up to Rs. 350,000 will be paid for receiving residential treatment of western medicine, and Rs. 200,000 for receiving residential treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital. The policy provides Rs. 3000 per day for treatment at a government hospital and Rs. 1 million for a heart surgery.
