New unit to monitor child phonography: Over 17,000 videos, pictures uploaded to cyberspace since last month

More than 17,000 video clips and photographs related to child phonography have been uploaded to the cyberspace from Sri Lanka through various devices since June 17 to July 28 this year.

Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said a special unit, the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, was established at the Children and Women Bureau in Colombo last month in order to monitor the phonographic video clips and photos related to children.

He said the police are engaged in patrolling the cyberspace all the time to monitor phonography related incidents. In addition, the modern technology has been utilized to identify the person or parties that upload video clips and photos related to child phornography.

Accordingly, since June 17 to July 28, 2021, 17,629 video clips and photographs have been uploaded to cyberspace from laptops, desktops, mobile phones and tabs in Sri Lanka, the spokesman said.

"The CID and Children and Women's Bureau are jointly conducting a special investigation into the criminal activities involving children. Especially, a person who is found circulating child pornographic video clips and photos is a punishable offence under the Law of this country. We have deployed special police teams to trace those criminals who upload them and also to trace those who share such phonographic material with various parties," SDIG Rohana said.(Daily Mirror)
