Showers to continue today

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times today (16) in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, stated the Meteorology Department.

Several spells of showers will occur in Northern and North-Central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Eastern and Uva provinces during the evening or night.

Fairly heavy falls of about 50 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts.

Wind speed can increase up to (30-40) kmph at times over the island. Wind speeds could reach up to 50 kmph particularly in Western slope of the Central hills, Northern, North Central and North-Western provinces.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

46,730 persons affected
Meanwhile, 46,730 persons of 11,796 families in nine districts have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

The Disaster Management Centre said individuals in the Colombo, Kegalle, Gampaha, Matara, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Galle, Puttalam and Kandy Districts have been affected.

So far, 04 deaths and 03 injuries have been reported. In addition, 639 houses have been damaged.

Meanwhile the National Building Research Organisation said the landslide warning issued in the Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Matara and Kegalle Districts continues remain in effect till 7pm today.
