Chief epidemiologist faces a barrage of criticism for not sharing data

Chief epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera is facing a barrage of criticism over his alleged reluctance to share COVID-19 data and that the epidemiology division provides "rotten data."

Leading trade unions in the health sector such as GMOA and PHI association and as well journalists are alleging the date released by the epidemiology division is not sufficient and as well as outdated.

GMOA's president consultant Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya criticized the role of Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, saying GMOA's repeated requests to share the data had been ignored.

Padeniya said data are shared among Dr. Samaraweera and two other doctors at the epidemiology division which has become a hindrance to contain the spreading of the disease.

PHI Association president Upul Rohana said it has become difficult to determine the level of virus's spreading because epidemiology division provides "rotten date."

He said the date given by the epidemiology divisions is two -three days old and the ground situation is completely "different and pathetic."
