323 so far; could be controlled: Dr Samaraweera

Another 103 Minuwangoda garment factory workers had been tested positive for Covid 19 this morning, making the total number of workers tested positive to 323, Chief Epidemiologist of the Academy of Epidemic Diseases Unit Dr Sudath Samaraweera said today.

The tests were conducted yesterday.

“Considering all aspects, the Epidemiology Unit had identified a large cluster of COVID-19 infected persons. With the PCR tests carried out by the Government, there will be a possibility of controlling the cluster curbing the virus further spreading,” he said.

He said 220 people were diagnosed positive with COVID-19 following 378 PCR tests carried out yesterday.

He said the PCR testing for COVID-19 positive factory workers was still underway.

“PCR tests are being conducted and still we are collecting samples from suspected workers and others who were traced to be associated with the people who were tested positive,” he said.

“Many workers had gone on vacation. According to the information we have, more people had identified from Districts of Jaffna, Kurunegala, Matale and Moneragala as workers of the Minuwangoda apparel factory.

He requested people to adhere to health guidelines and reach hospitals for treatment if they had any symptoms associated with Covid-19.

“Such people with symptoms are requested to use private transport,” he said.
