SLMC requests to delay election Featured

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has written to the Election Commission pointing out that under the prevailing condition free and fair election cannot be held, therefore not to issue an election announcement.

The letter was sent on April 16 with the signature of SLMC Secretary Nizam Kariyappar.

They point out that it is inappropriate to set a date for the election until the health professionals and the police grant approval to carry out the day-to-day affairs and there is a guarantee that the plague will not spread.

The letter also stated that they convey their respect to the gazette notification issued on March 21, postponing the election which was scheduled to be held on April 25.

It has been pointed out that the election was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a condition which applies to present context as well.

The SLMC has requested not to issue an announcement to hold the elections as the parties that take interest in this issue and political parties need to discuss the issue before the Supreme Court.

The letter also reminds the President of the suggestion made by the Election Commission to inquire from the Supreme Court about the inability to hold elections within three months after the dissolution of Parliament.
