Former Prime Minister and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has criticized the failure to ensure global action in the fight against the coronavirus.
In an interview with WION News, Wickremesinghe said that world leaders and international organisations have not come forward to take leadership to address the issue.
“IMF, World Bank, UN. Someone has to come forward. Which is not happening? When it came to climate change there were people. Here, who is taking leadership? No one is talking. Some of them are fighting,” he said.
Wickremesinghe noted that this was a global pandemic so there needs to be a global response where world leaders step up and give direction on how to resolve it.
Asked if China should give Sri Lanka a loan waiver as a result of the crisis, Wickremesinghe said that it will need to be a policy decision China will need to take as giving Sri Lanka a loan waiver would mean it will need to do the same for other countries as well.
