SLFP to contest alone ; No SLPP nomination for Maithri

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has formally informed the Elections Commission yesterday (10) that they will contest the upcoming general election alone.

The SLFP Central Committee meeting today (11) will decide whether the party will contest under the 'hand' symbol or another.

Ahead of the meeting, electorate organisers are to be summoned on a provincial level to inquire their opinions on the matter.

Meanwhile, it is reported that several party bigwigs and electoral organizers have been pressurizing the party leadership to contest alone in the next general election to safeguard the SLFP.

No nominations for Maithri?

Meanwhile, former President Maithripala Sirisena has been having discussions with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) about nominating him for the upcoming election, political sources say.

However, some SLPP leaders are of the option that this would lead to a host of conflicts.

It has now been proposed that Mr. Sirisena should not be allowed to contest the general election and should be given a SLFP national list seat instead.
