Leadership tussle: No decision at UNP meeting

The meeting of the Parliamentary Group of the United National Party held at Sirikotha yesterday ended without reaching a decision on the party leadership, party sources said.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the meeting ended with Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe announcing that both Karu Jayasuriya and Opposition Leader

Sajith Premadasa would work together to ensure that the party would not be split.

Asked why meetings over the leadership of United National Party often seem to end without any decision being made, Kariyawasam said that those members who endorsed MP Sajith Premadasa’s leadership were disappointed that Premadasa had not been given the party leadership.

“It was more than anything else a problem related to the constitution of the party. We don’t want our leaders to behave in breach of the party’s constitution,” he said.

“In most ways it was like trying to convince a newborn that crying was illogical,” a UNP Parliamentarian choosing to remain anonymous told the Daily News referring to the meeting.

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader MP Sajith Premadasa told the media he expects nothing short of a democratic solution to resolve the issue.
