June 17, a crucial date for SLFP

June 17 is proving to be crucial for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as a final decision on talks between the SLFP and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is to be taken on that date.

The SLPP, which will be holding its' national convention around August - September, is expecting a final decision of the SLFP, which is being even more eagerly awaited after president Maithripala Sirisena's recent statement during a cabinet meeting. At the meeting, President Sirisena, who is the SLFP chairman, had announced he would not back the Rajapaksas.

The SLPP had earlier announced that they would unveil the party's presidential candidate at the national convention.

Just one prize
Meanwhile, with SLFP members urging president Sirisena to contest the presidential election, SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa has added a Facebook post with regard to this.

He had said that since the SLPP holds the majority power in the country at the present, a candidate should definitely be named from the party at the upcoming presidential election.

Even at literary awards or drama awards, every book or drama can be nominated. However, only one will be awarded the prize, he had added.

On a separate note, chairman of the SLPP, - Prof. G.L. Peiris says that when taking a decision on a new coalition, all parties who had the SLPP from the beginning will be consulted.
