It is reported that United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa is preparing to contest as the Prime Ministerial candidate from a new party.
UNP MP Harin Fernando states that this decision has been made after Ranil Wickremesinghe refused to appoint Sajith Premadasa as the UNP leader.
Fernando says decision, which is 95% confirmed,will be announced in January.
Harin Fernando has told 'The Morning' that the party has also requested the supporters of the United National Front (UNF) to join it.
However, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition on the 3rd January 2020.
Premadasa says that it is not sufficient and that he wants the party leadership as well.
Why Sajith is not given the leadership?
Sources from Wickremesinghe's supporters say that Premadasa has been asked to submit a proposal to strengthen UNP, and that the matter is continuing due to Premadasa's inability submit the proposal.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Mirror learns that Premadasa has decided to contest the next general election under the Kangaroo symbol.
It is said that it is considered a lucky symbol, hencce selected.
However, the party that now holds the Kangaroo sign is the Labor Party.
