Harin claims election date set for 5 October

Tourism, Lands, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Harin Fernando yesterday claimed that an election will be held on 5 October this year.

“An election will be held on 5 October 2024,” the Minister told journalists in Galle.

Usually, elections are held on a weekend and as per the Minister’s statement, 5 October is the first Saturday in the month which could be a likely date.

Fernando expressed confidence that President Ranil Wickremesinghe will emerge victorious in the upcoming election.

However, the Minister did not specify whether the election would be for the General or Presidential polls.

As a Cabinet Minister, Fernando’s announcement carries significant weight in the political landscape, as the country prepares for the forthcoming election season.
