Women more vulnerable in economic downturn - NPP

NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament yesterday the burden of the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka falls on every citizen and women are among the most vulnerable to its impacts.

This has led women to think about whether they have to live or die, she said. The MP stated this while joining the debate on Notification under the Excise Ordinance, Six Regulations under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act and Regulations under the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act.

MP Amarasuriya said that she does not know how the economy of the country will collapse through a peaceful agitation and that the laws should be implemented not in the rooms but on the practical level. The MP said that today’s agitations and protests have to be performed as per the government’s will and I see it as fascism.

She said women are under the most pressure from the current economic crisis. “Today on International Women’s Day, we should understand their pressure and take decisions. Otherwise, just talking about women is useless,”she said.
