While claiming that the online education was an utter failure, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday alleged that the government had disregarded the education of the school and university students.
JVP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that the school and university education of students were in crisis for nearly one and half years now.
He charged that the government had not given priority to the education of children, which was vital in the future of the country.
“Even though the government has focused on other areas at least to some extent, the government’s focus on education is very poor,” he said.
Herath said most of the children have faced numerous hardships due to less access to required facilities and connectivity to online education.
“According to the Department of Census and Statistics data, only less than 34 percent of children below 18 years have access to online facilities. Only 9 percent of university students have been able to obtain access to online facilities,” he said.
He said the government has not paid any attention to resume university education by vaccinating the university community of 181,000 which includes students, academic and non-academic staff.
“It costs only Rs. 800 million to vaccinate the university community. But, the government was planning to import vehicles for MPS at a cost of Rs.3600 million,” he said.(Daily Mirror)
