Former President Maithripala Sirisena presented medical reports pertaining to his treatment at a Singapore Hospital during his stay there between April 16 and 21, 2019 to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry Probing the Easter Sunday attacks yesterday.
On a previous occasion the Commission ordered Sirisena to present the documentary evidence to prove that he underwent medications during his visit at the time the bombings took place.
Presenting his medical reports through his lawyer Maithri Gunarathne, PC, the former President requested the PCoI to keep these documents for only the use of the PCoI as they were extremely personal to him.
Accordingly the Commission expressed its agreement to Sirisena’s request. At this point Anura Meddegoda, PC, attorney appearing on behalf of former IGP Pujith Jayasundara, requested the PCoI to let him also go through the medical reports.
But, his request was turned down by the PCoI Chairman saying that they have allowed certain parties that might be mentioned by witnesses to be present at the PCoI to ensure that these parties are not aggrieved.
“I don’t want to go through the medical aspects. I just want to see if the former President had been undergoing treatment at this Singapore hospital on April 20 and 21 of 2019,” Meddegoda said.
However, the PCoI Chairman said:”Five of us are competent enough to determine if the former President had been undergoing treatment during those days by going through these documents”.
