French connection in another garbage containers revealed

Another controversial waste recycling deal involving the importation of used mattresses between a French company and an unidentified local firm has come light following the leak of e mail communication with relevant parties recently.

According to a leaked email message sent by the operations Director of French based DAT-Arbantis specialized international recovery company, Chris O’Donnell, their budget for each container which will be sent to the island for refurbishing was US$ 1400.

He requested the Sri Lankan firm to reship containers to port within 10 days after gate out and detention and demurrage will be taken care of by DAT-Arbantis French company.

However the local firm replied to him claiming that the importation of waste is illegal in Sri Lanka.

In an email reply, he suggested that his firm could offer an alternate solution to bring down the stock of mattresses at a cost of $45 per each mattress.

But French Company Director rejected the suggestion of the local company stating that he will take measures to hand over the contract to another local party.

According details in e mails exchanged between the two firms, 150 containers of used mattresses had been imported to Sri Lanka and removed it from customs to an unknown location.

President of National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection Ranjith Vithange says he will lodge a complaint at the Colombo Fort police Head Quarters requesting the police to carry out an investigation into this illicit deal .

There was no information relating to the local company which is allegedly involved in this racket, he disclosed.
