SL unveils AI policy taking a cue from highest policy maker aspirant

Taking a cue from the Business magnet multi billionaire, Dhammika Perera country’s new aspirant to become highest policy maker in the country, Sri Lanka takes the first step towards preparing a national strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Mr. Perera articulated the urgency of introducing AI in the island nation at several fully packed forums recently as a progressive move to address numerous socio-economic problems, warning failure would make the country a slowcoach.

A lot of present-day problems or failure to solve perennial ones is because of emotional thinking rather than practical. With AI, machine-learning and deep-learning - all developed by human intelligence – is the way forward.

We must start work today on a national strategy for AI if Sri Lanka is to progress, or we may miss the AI bus and its host of benefits, he claimed.

 

With the inspiration of the Business magnet, Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM) has launched a draft policy framework to promote artificial intelligence (AI) in Sri Lanka on Thursday 28.

Sri Lanka should urgently prepare a national strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a progressive move to address multiple socio-economic problems, warning failure would make the country a laggard.

AI Policy Framework Draft for Sri Lanka’ sets the stage for Sri Lanka as a nation to embrace AI and create the strategy for the country to seize the opportunity inherent in being an AI-driven nation while creating jobs and improving economic growth and prosperity for all citizens.

The proposed AI strategy will try to address the current shortfalls of in the ecosystem such as lesser numbers of data science graduates, low amounts of research being conducted, lack of implementation, lack of skill availability, low awareness, absence of special data laws that protect from personal information theft and lack of data sets to solve problems.

The strategy encompasses seven high level objectives which are increasing awareness and adaptation of AI in both public and private sector

It will be introducing regulations for a level playing field for AI, Equipping society and people for the AI nation, Showcasing AI’s capabilities for the greater good, incentivising fundamental and applied research in AI, identifying niche opportunities and attracting leading global technology and AI companies to set up in Sri Lanka.
