Minister of Education G.L. Peiris says that they are anticipating to hold the GCE Ordinary Levels exam in March 2021.
He was speaking at a media briefing being held at the Department of Government Information.
He further said that the exam will not be postponed beyond March 2021 and after the exam, results would be released within 03 months, by June, enabling A/L classes to start in July 2021.
Noting that 621,000 candidates will be sitting for the GCE O/L exam this year, the minister said out of the island's 10,165 schools, only 5,100 can be opened due to the prevailing health situation in the country. Noting that roughly 50% of the candidates are unable to attend school in this backdrop, the minister said it would not be fair to hold the exam in January 2021.
However, the ministry will not take measures to close all schools in the country, he added.
