All schools in Eastern Province to be closed from tomorrow

All schools in the Eastern Province (EP) will close for three days from tomorrow due to bad weather, Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath said.

Accordingly, the Governor advised the Provincial Education Authorities to close all schools until Friday (4).

The Governor took this decision considering the red notices issued by the Meteorological Department claiming the possibility of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal developing into a hurricane, and to reduce the impact on people in the province and also to use schools as IDP centres for those affected.

“A special programme would be implemented in the EP to save people from disasters such as hurricanes and floods due to heavy rains,” the Governor said.

“During earlier disasters, a large number of displaced families were located to one school, but this time more schools will be needed as the camps will have to be run under health-safe methods, controlling the COVID-19 virus,” she advised.

“We also instructed the District Secretaries to maintain the camps under the health safeguards and to assign each displaced family to one classroom,” she added.
