Government  begins  the new constitution process

The acceptance of public proposals for the proposed new constitution has commenced, the justice ministry has said.

Justice Secretary MPK Mayadunne said the public can put forward their proposals for the new constitution, to a special committee tasked with the exercise until November30..

According to Minister Udaya Gammanpila the government’s process to the new Sri Lankan Constitution will be a two-step process,

The first step of enacting the 20th Amendment has been taken to correct “anomalies” in the current Constitution and the second will be drafting of a completely new Constitution, he said.

The drafting of a new basic law has been handed over to a nine-member committee headed by President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva.

The other members of the Committee are Gamini Marapana PC, Manohara de Silva PC, Professor G L Peiris, Professor Naazima Kamardeen, Senior-Lecturer A Sarweswaran, Saman Ratwatte PC, Sanjeewa Jayawardhana PC and Professor Wasantha Seneviratne.
