The Election Commission (EC) yesterday urged religious leaders not to allow places of worship to be used for promoting political parties or candidates vying for the upcoming election.
EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, in a press release, said that any candidate or party that does so will be found guilty of Undue Influence. He added that the Commission has received several complaints regarding the matter from the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Ampara districts.
The EC Chairman has requested all political parties to refrain from holding election meetings at places of worship.
The Commission has also instructed the public to inform the nearest Police Station, District Election Complaint Management Unit, or National Election Complaint Management Centre if they were to find anyone violating this law.
