Removing refugees is not easy

Sending the the Pakistani refugees, who are currently living in Sri Lanka, to other countries due to the prevailing situation in the country will not be easy, Foreign Ministry sources say.

The President has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to remove them from Sri Lanka.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs there are 1,678 refugees and asylum seekers in Sri Lanka and majority are from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The process of placing them in a third country is done by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and it is a lengthy process, reports say.

Meanwhile, UNHCR with the support of security forces has made arrangements to ensure the safety of the refugees as protests were held in several areas requesting the government to not place them in the area.
