The National Elections Commission receives the power to enforce election laws from today (15 September).
Accordingly, the National Elections Commission has the authority to make the announcement calling for nominations for the Presidential election, hold the election and take action against those who violate election laws.
Chairman of the National Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has announced that nominations for the Presidential election will be called after the 16th of this month.
He has also said that an independent decision will be taken regarding the date of the Presidential election.
Steps have also been taken to regulate the way social media should act during the election period.
It is said that the National Elections Commission has directed its attention towards how the media should act during the presidential election.
