Red Warning issued for heavy rain, strong winds

With the risk of heavy rainfall and strong winds ahead, the Meteorological Department issued a red warning at 9:00 p.m. yesterday (01).

The Department's Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre detected low-level atmospheric disturbances around Sri Lanka, and expects rains to continue for the next 24 hours.

It also expects strong winds up to 70-80kmph in speed and thundershowers, prompting the warning.

Over the course of the day, over 100mm of rainfall was recorded in various parts of the Galle and Kalutara Districts.

Due to this, a Level 1 (Yellow) threat of landslides is expected in Niyagama and Elpitiya in Galle, and Walallawita in Kalutara.
