Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will officially assume the leadership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) when the party holds its convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium today (11).
A party spokesman said that after officially taking over the reins of the party, Mr Rajapaksa would honour the requests made by party faithful and announce the SLPP’s presidential candidate on the same stage.
The spokesman confirmed that former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is tipped to be the SLPP’s presidential candidate, would be present at tomorrow’s convention.
The convention is due to get underway at 3 pm and the spokesman said he did not expect the proceedings to last more than an hour. SLPP supporters from around the country are expected to converge in Colombo tomorrow for the convention.
